Covering an area of 1,613 sq km (623 sq miles), Mahale Mountain National Park is located in the remote western part of Tanzania. It boards one of the oldest and deepest lakes, Lake Tanganyika and is one of the most striking places in the World. This park is famous for a hiker’s paradise, but most importantly it is home to chimpanzee habituation. Mahale is a sanctuary for primates and chimpanzee trekking is one of the prime reasons for visiting the park. Apart from Chim trekking, the park is also renowned for its fantastic sunsets over Lake Tanganyika, which makes it an essential stop for enthusiastic photographers and safari lovers.
The park is crowded with life, waterways and waterfalls are everywhere and around the shoreline of the lake, are the most perfect white sandy beaches anyone could envisage. Diverse species of animals have been recorded here, predominant among these being species from various monkey and ape families including the yellow baboon, red colobus, blue monkeys and the red-tailed monkey as well as 73 other mammals and over 90 unique species of fish swim in the clear waters of the lake. Sable antelope, mongoose, warthog and sometimes even lion and leopard also roam here. You can also spot hippos swimming in the crystal clear water of the Lake Tanganyika. The park will satisfy both amateur and bird lovers. Pelicans and different storks as well as malachite kingfishers, pied kingfishers and fish eagles are some of the major birds you can spot easily.
