Spreading over an area of 75,000 square kilometers (47,000 square mile) tract of wilderness Mikumi National Park is Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park. It is also a tourist hotspot like Serengeti National park bearing the same kind of acacias, baobabs dotted savannah. The northern boundary of the park is home of The Ruhebo and Uluguru mountains. Here you can witness a huge number of elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, the greater kudus, sable antelopes and much more wildlife. The park is also home to lions as well as leopards. Spotting the rare African wild dog can be a treat for visitors. The Mkata Plains are the best for wildlife viewing. Besides these, the park is also famous as birder’s paradise as more than 400 species of birds can be seen here. The most common ones being the black-bellied bustards, bateleur eagles, guinea fowls, ox peckers, marabou storks, colorful lilac breasted rollers and yellow-throated long claws. During the rainy season the migrating birds are also seen. Two artificial pools also can be found 5 km north of the main gate which attracts few hippos. Except hippos, an array of water birds also enjoys the beauty of the pool.
Mikumi National Park is best to visit throughout the year. June to October is considered the best time as animals are attracted to the waterhole and enhance the beauty of nature. This period is dry and the vegetation becomes scarce for the animals and makes them assemble at the water sources. September and October
