Selous Game Reserve is a hidden gem located in Southern Tanzania. Being home to elephant, wild dog, buffalo, hippo, crocodile and fantastic pride of lion, it is one of the favorite game viewing areas among visitors. The lakes and rivers of Selous are the lifeblood of the wildlife residing inside the park. Selous Game Reserve is Africa's largest game reserve covering around 45,000km² of wilderness, with grassy plains, open woodland, mountains and forests. The size of this park is around twice the size of Serengeti National Park and thrice the size of South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Getting the recognition of one of Tanzania's three World Heritage Sites, Selous is a wonderful place for wildlife enthusiast presenting an amazing introduction to well-preserved Africa. Tanzania’s largest river Rufiji flows in the heart of Selous Game Reserve. Witha network of lakes, swamps and channels, it contributes an outstanding ecological system in East Africa. Except these, Selous also attracts the attention of the guest offering the best walking safari, boat safari; fly camping safari and amazing photography opportunity.
The remoteness and calmness of the area attract the large mammal population to make their home. Buffalo, hippo and lion roam in a large population. Apart from these wildebeest, zebra, impala, giraffe, greater kudu, waterbuck, hartebeests and eland harbor in Selous. More than 440 bird species have been recorded in the Selous including pink-backed pelicans, African skimmers and giant kingfishers, white-fronted bee-eater colonies whilst pairs of fish eagle, palmnut vulture and ibises.
Late June to October offers the best game viewing opportunity. As the period is dry, the vegetation becomes thinner and visitors can spot wildlife concentration near the water
